Diners at Florida Japanese steakhouse poisoned by narcotics, sheriff’s office says

At least seven people were hospitalized after being poisoned at a Japanese steakhouse in the Florida Panhandle Saturday night, the Santa Rosa County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday.

The Santa Rosa Major Crimes Unit began investigating an “incident” they believe initiated at Nikko’s Japanese Steak House in Pace, Fla., Saturday night and confirmed at least seven people were treated at local hospitals.

Initial information gave no cause for the victim’s hospitalization, but rampant speculation on social media suggested narcotics were involved. SRSO Public Information Officer Jillian Durkin confirmed the seven people were treated for narcotics poisoning.

The Pensacola News Journal reported one person alleged to have been hospitalized and said an employee tainted the food with a narcotic.

Durkin also said investigators had interviewed one individual, but that person has been excluded as a suspect. Other interviews are being conducted.

In addition to Santa Rosa investigators, The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations and Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco are assisting with the investigation.
